COMMON NAME: Red Fox
GENUS SPECIES: Vulpes vulpes
DISTRIBUTION: World wide, with the exception of Antarctica.
DIET: Foxes are opportunist feeders. They will devour insects, small mammals, carrion, birds and some fruits and vegetables.
FOXES AND PEOPLE: Foxes have varying reputations in different parts of the world. In many areas they are hunted for sport and fur. In literature, foxes are most often portrayed as tricksters, the sly fox. There are many Native American tales of the fox as a trickster. Several popular authors have used foxes to teach lessons, values, and morals. Read up on Reynard's Tales and Aesop's Fables. Japanese legends associate foxes with the ability to "shape-shift".
FOXES AT SILLY SAFARI STATION: There are 4 foxes at Silly Safari Station. Sanford is our Red Fox. Tundra is our Arctic Fox. Sinopa and Taluka are a brother and sister pair of baby Grey Foxes on loan from Maple Lane Wildlife Park. Sinopa and Taluka will be making the rounds at Silly Safari Live Animal Shows through the Summer of 2009, before returning home to Maple Lane.
